As many of you now know, I have thrived within the automotive space and highly advocate to anyone exploring a new industry. But, I don’t just want you to hear my voice, I’m bringing in some industry experts and specialists to write on the topics they are passionate about.
In my first-ever guest blog, I want to introduce you to Thomas Dobie, aka Cars of Glasgow.
Thomas’ content not only explores the thrilling new cars on our market, but also some of the amazing technology being introduced. You can catch Cars of Glasgow on all the socials, and I’ll link these at the bottom of the blog.
So, without further ado, I’ve asked Thomas to give us some content on the used EV market, with his recommendations and top choices listed below.
Tesla Model 3
A car that needs no introduction as Tesla revolutionised the EV mass market landscape.
Cost
The Model 3 is their cheapest offering, and prices have dropped since its launch in the UK. You can pick up high mileage early examples for below £10,000.
Design
The Model 3 was facelifted in 2024; however, you are going to be hard pressed to spot the changes. The interior of the Model 3 is dominated by one large central touchscreen that is the hub of the car. This screen controls everything from your radio, climate control as well as driving modes and your wipers. Even the speed read out is on the centre screen.
The design language is minimalist with most models being equipped with the black synthetic leather interior. A huge panoramic fixed glass roof is standard on all models and each Model 3 is tech laden from the factory. There are even some games to keep you amused whilst you wait to charge your car.
EV Charging
Charging the Model 3 uses the CCS connector for rapid charging, expect 20% to 80 % in 24 minutes. On a home 7kW charger, you can expect just over 10.5 hours to fully charge your Model 3 long range.
Performance and Technical Specifications
The base Model 3 is a rear wheel drive and claims 254 miles of range. Whilst the Performance all-wheel drive claims 329 miles of range. All model 3 cars feature an 88-litre front boot or frunk as well as a spacious 594 litre boot in the rear.
Verdict
So, if you are looking for a capable and technology-laden car, the Model 3 should be an EV to consider.
Porsche Taycan
Porsche’s first mass market vehicle launched in 2019 as a saloon and an estate version followed.
Cost
On the used market these once £100,000 plus cars can be had for under £35,000 for an early example.
Design and Specification
The Porsche Taycan is spec sensitive and used examples can vary wildly, so take the time to browse the classifieds for the right car. The interior of the Taycan is modern Porsche with a premium cabin and driver focused cockpit.
EV Charging
All Taycans are on an 800v architecture and can charge up to 150kW from a 150kW charger. It is worth noting that the ‘turbo’ models can charge at 270kW on a 300kW charger. Which means the turbo can charge from 10% to 80 % in 17 minutes using a 300 kW DC fast charger. You can use the type 2 charger whilst as home or work and the CCS for rapid charging.
Performance
Depending on the model, the Taycan is available as a rear wheel drive or an all-wheel drive.
All Taycan models can reach 60mph at a brisk pace, with turbo models boasting a sub 3 second time to reach 60mph.
If you opt for the more practical ‘Cross Turismo’ body style you can enjoy Porsche driving dynamics and bring the whole family along for the drive. You will also enjoy around 300 miles of range.
Verdict
So, if you are looking for a premium and great driving EV the Porsche Taycan should be on your list to test drive. Just make sure that you save some pennies away for servicing and parts.
Vauxhall Corsa E / Mokka E
Vauxhall offer its bestselling compact SUV and hatchback as an all-electric. Both models offer seating for five within a compact vehicle and offer decent tech in a cabin that was built to a price point.
Performance and Cost
Both the Mokka-e and Corsa-E use a 50kWh battery pack that claims around 180 miles of range. The power output is just north of 130 bhp. However, you are buying either of these, not for outright driving thrills but as an economical daily transport vehicle.
There are used examples of each below £10,000, however if you increased your budget by a few thousand then there are lower mileage and younger cars to choose from. A massive saving compared to the original price of over £30,000.
EV Charging
Both vehicles can charge using a CCS 100kW charger, which means you can achieve 80% charge in 30 minutes. Using a home 7.4kW charger you can expect to charge in around 7.5 hours.
Verdict
So, if you are looking for a compact daily EV the Mokka-E and the Corsa-E are competitive used purchases.
MG 5 SW EV
I bet you were not expecting to see a MG on this list, the MG 5 SW has proven to be a practical and reliable EV. With owners boasting little to no maintenance costs over years of ownership and some examples online are showing over 100,000 miles.
Technical Specifications and Performance
You can choose from a 52kWh or 61kWh battery, with a range between 160 miles and 250 miles. The MG 5 SW boasts around 150bhp and all that power goes to the front wheels. Acceleration is decent at 7.3 seconds to 60mph.
EV Charging
Charging from a home 7kW charger can take around 7.5 hours to charge. Whilst using a CCS charger at a rapid 50kW charging station you can expect to reach 80% in around 60 minutes.
Design
The interior is a mixed bag as cheap feeling plastics and shapeless seats adorn the cabin, whilst its boxy profile and useful storage adds practicality. The MG 5 SW is one of the few EV estates offered in the UK.
Cost
Prices start around £8,000 for a higher mileage early example, whilst facelift models can be found for around the £16,000 range.
Warranty
MG offer a 7-year warranty on their UK vehicles, so if you choose a slightly used example you can enjoy years of warranty for that added piece of mind.
Verdict
So, if you are looking for a practical and cost-effective EV, the MG 5 SW should not be overlooked.
Lexus UX 300e
Lexus’ first production EV uses the popular compact SUV UX model, known as the UX 300e. It is a small crossover that offers seating for five, a comfortable ride and a host of safety features as standard.
EV Charging and Specification
It is powered by a 150-kW electric motor and uses a 54kWh battery pack. It uses a 50kW CHAdeMO charging port, which has gone out of fashion for the CCS type 2 that most new EVs use.
Design
Lexus offered the UX 300e in a variety of trim levels, I would recommend finding a premium plus or the top of the range ‘Takumi’ trim. Which adds features such as a heated steering wheel and heated seats.
Performance and Warranty
If you can live within the claimed 196 miles of range, the UX 300e offers a well-built quality interior and it should be reliable given the brands reputation. Lexus offer a 10-year warranty in the UK (T&Cs apply).
Cost
Priced new from £40,000, today you can pick a used one up from £15,000.
Verdict
So, if you can live with the CHAdeMO charger and the range, you can enjoy a quality Lexus product under warranty for a fraction of its original sale price.
