Iconic Christmas Movie Car Moments

Cars are not always the focus of Christmas films, but some scenes are instantly recognisable because of how they are used - and often it's a spot of tomfoolery that helps us remember them. So, from the Christmas classics and newbies, can you remember the iconic car scenes? And, are there any I've missed?

9 Most iconic car scenes in Christmas films

1. The Holiday (2006)

Amanda driving the red Mini through Surrey

Amanda struggles to drive a red Mini along narrow English country lanes while staying in Iris’s cottage. The scene is memorable for showing the contrast between American driving habits and rural UK roads and is one of the film’s most frequently referenced moments. However, we also see Amanda drinking at the shop, begging the question of how she got home...

2. The Christmas Chronicles (2018)

The stolen Dodge Challenger

In an effort to save Santa's reindeer and get Christmas back on track, Teddy Pierce borrows a stolen Dodge Challenger, tearing it through the streets of Chicago to distract the police and help save Christmas.

3. Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992)

Taxis and the stretch limousine

Kevin rides through New York in a stretch limousine while eating pizza, drinking coke and watching cartoons. Isn't that the life?

4. Elf (2003)

Buddy and the New York taxi

Buddy confidently steps into traffic and is hit by a yellow taxi. The brief scene is widely remembered for its timing and physical comedy.

5. Die Hard (1988)

Argyle and the limousine

Argyle waits in a limousine outside Nakatomi Plaza and later crashes it into the villain’s getaway vehicle. The limo becomes part of the film’s final action sequence.

6. Love Actually (2003)

The drive to the airport / The octopus scene

Daniel and Sam rush through London by car to reach the airport. The scene is one of the film’s most important story moments. Then again, we have another iconic moment between the prime minister and Natalie, having a rather serious conversation separated by a child wearing an octopus costume.

7. Jingle All the Way (1996)

The destroyed car

On his search for a Turboman toy, Howard completely destroys his car driving all over Minnesota in search for the sold out action figure.

8. Office Christmas Party (2016)

The minivan jump

A chaotic chase through Chicago ends with a minivan being launched off a bridge. The scene stands out for its scale and action, especially for a Christmas comedy.

9. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)

The station wagon and the logging truck

Early in the film, Clark Griswold tailgates a large logging truck on the motorway while driving the family station wagon. The sequence escalates into one of the film’s most memorable driving scenes and sets the tone for the chaos that follows.
